471 is a new all-services overlay of 662, covering the same North Mississippi region — including Southaven, Horn Lake, Tupelo, Oxford, Corinth, Greenville, Starkville and Columbus. It went into service on January 30, 2026, approved by the Mississippi Public Service Commission (NANPA Planning Letter PL-627) after 662 approached exhaustion of its available numbers. Existing 662 numbers are unchanged; only new phone lines may receive a 471 number, and only after the 662 pool is used up. The 662 region was already on mandatory 10-digit dialing before the overlay, so there is no new dialing habit to learn.

How the 471 rollout happened

The Mississippi PSC approved the 471 overlay on June 13, 2024, and NANPA documented it in Planning Letter PL-627 that August. A network-preparation and public-education period ran through late 2025, and 471 became available for assignment on January 30, 2026.
