483 is Alabama's seventh area code, added on February 23, 2026 as an all-services overlay of 334 across central and southeast Alabama — Montgomery, Dothan, Auburn, Prattville, Phenix City and Selma. It was approved by the Alabama Public Service Commission (NANPA Planning Letter PL-626) to relieve 334, which was projected to run out of numbers in early 2026. Unlike the New York City or Mississippi overlays, this rollout brought a real change in how people dial: the 334 region moved from 7-digit to mandatory 10-digit dialing on January 23, 2026, so every local call must now include the area code. Existing 334 numbers keep working; only new lines may be issued a 483 number.
