840 is the Inland Empire's newest area code
840 is a new all-services overlay of 909 in California's Inland Empire, covering San Bernardino, Ontario, Pomona, Rancho Cucamonga and the surrounding area; it went into service on February 23, 2021. The California Public Utilities Commission authorized it as 909 ran short of numbers. The rollout changed dialing: the 909 region moved to mandatory 10-digit dialing — you must dial 1 plus the area code plus the number — in January 2021. Existing 909 numbers are unchanged; only new lines may receive an 840 number.
Because 840 is new and unfamiliar, some people are wary when it appears on caller ID and search for “who called me from 840?” An area code only shows where a number is registered, and any number can be spoofed — so a 840 call is not suspicious on its own. Judge each call by what it asks for, not the code. Is a call from 840 a scam?
